What does this mean for you as a pregnant woman?

Continuity of midwifery care is now based in the community and close to home. Appointments can be arranged to suit your schedule.

This means:

  • You have local access to a quality maternity service

  • No long drive to the hospital

  • No expensive hospital parking

  • You see the same midwife at every visit.

What does this mean for you as a GP?

You have access to a safe, reliable maternity service provider within the community. Your pregnant patients are supported to have shared care with their birthing hospital and Perth Maternity will do all the scheduled maternity care.

This means:

  • You know who will be caring for your women

  • Perth Maternity has a formal governance structure as a maternity service provider

  • There is an obstetric co-director on the management team who understands primary health care and has a Collaborative Agreement with all the midwives

  • Comprehensive health assessments are completed at each visit

  • Women are offered care in line with the state’s best evidence-based guidelines.

  • All referrals are managed in a timely manner.

  • You are encouraged to see your woman regularly to review their progress and continue to provide the family with primary health care throughout the pregnancy.
